HIKING/NATURE WALKING TRAILS IN RWANDA.
The Congo Nile trail
The Congo Nile trail is one of the best trails any enthusiastic hiker or nature lover shouldn’t miss to explore while on hiking safari in Rwanda. This trail is distinct and offers challenging hiking experiences with peak of 2630m. Hikers wind through the fringes of Lake Kivu, jungles, terraced hills but it rewards travel endeavors with lots of amazing experiences.
The Congo Nile trail is 227kms long and you may need about 10 days to have a complete journey on foot. It allows you experience the actual rural life as you navigate via fishing villages along Lake Kivu and also watch residents as they do their daily activities.
Bisoke Volcano.
If you enjoy hiking then a visit to Bisoke volcano in Volcanoes National Park should be a must. This volcano is known for its rewarding adventures. Bisoke is a dormant volcano on border between Rwanda and DR. Congo. It rises at elevation 3711m and consists of a bottle-green crater lake which hikers can explore.
Hiking through Bisoke can be 5 hours or whole day as this may depend on hikers’ speed. En-route, you come across birds, wildlife, flora and enjoy the jaw-dropping surrounding areas.
Hiking Karisimbi Volcano.
Karisimbi features as the highest of all the 8 Virunga Volcanoes that are found within the Virunga Conservation Area. Rising about 4507m, Karisimbi volcano offers amazingly challenging climbing adventures to enthusiastic hikers on tour in Volcanoes National Park. It derives its name which is translated as white shell due to presence of white capped cloud cover on its summit which you will have a chance to view. Around trip on hiking tour up Mt. Karisimbi requires 2 days.
Other than volcano climbing/hiking, hikes in Volcanoes National Park are also best done on Dian Fossey tomb hike. This ushers you into Dian Fossey’s tomb site to have in-depth learning about her gorilla conservation legacy.
Buhanga sacred forest walk.
Buhanga forest is a mystical forest with rich Rwanda’s cultures. Mt. Kabuye stands 2,700m making it Rwanda’s tallest mountain if Virunga volcanoes are excluded. Unlike other summits, hiking up Mt. Kabuye doesn’t require hikers to have a permit and the place can easily be reached by car.
Nyungwe hiking trails.
To the southern province of Rwanda, Nyungwe Forest National Park is credited for its amazing landscape and rewarding trails. The park is blessed with extensive network of hiking or nature trails; they include;
Igishigishigi trail; this trail is 2.1kms and comes with mesmerizing views of canopy walkway and colorful flowers.
Karamba trail; this is found along the former gold mine and it is considerably one of the perfect places for bird watching.
Uwinka trail; one of the most challenging trials to trek through but rewarding. It is from Uwinka where even chimpanzee treks start from besides Cyamudongo trail.
Irebero trail; this is known for its excellent views of Nyungwe Forest’s 2 highest peaks plus the Lake Kivu. Other hiking trails to explore in Nyungwe include Ngabwe trail, Rukuzi trail, Kamiranzovu trail, Isumo trail, Muzimu trail, Bigugu trail, Irebero trail and many others.
